Composting Workshops

I believe that 'If you are good at something, you should share it with others!'

Composting is a good 'addiction'. Once you put your hands into it and get the first batch of 'Black Gold', you can never stop making more!

By composting you are creating a win-win situation :

  • You are responsible for your own waste and so you are helping your country to keep it clean, by not sending out kitchen waste from your home.
  • You know the real worth of the kitchen 'waste' only when you see and smell the ready aromatic BLACK GOLD in your hands.
  • You are saving a lot of $ on your pocket. Rather than buying Organic Manure from unreliable stores which is no less than Rs.40 - Rs.60 per KG
  • Even if you do not have a garden, putting the ready compost into bottom of a tree in front of your house would enrich it and heal the soil around your house!

As a beginner in 2013, I too had MANY  questions - HOW? WHEN? WHAT? WHERE? WHY?'s of Composting. Since I was eager to find the best source of manure for my Organic garden, (without costing me more), I researched online extensively; connected with some known pioneers on this topic, and then, I felt confident to start off with it.

My composting Guru is Mrs. Vani Murthy, a pioneer in composting since many years. I learnt all about composting looking at her videos in the net.

With my Composting GURU - Mrs. Vani Murthy

I could not stop myself from sharing the knowledge I have gained on it.

As 'each drop adds to become an ocean', each person's efforts towards this cause can make a huge difference for us and our future generations.

So, "being there" as a beginner, I understand your curiosity and questions on the topic, and hence I conduct Composting Workshops (at my home, at your apartment, in your locality - per your convenience).

Agenda of the workshop

  • Why Segregating waste at home?
  • What is compost?
  • Uses of compost
  • Types of composting process
    • Aerobic
    • Anaerobic
    • Vermicomposting
  • Wet waste Management "tools" or "options available" ?
  • Harvesting compost
  • Do's and Dont's in Composting
  • Reference Links and help.
  • And always followed by Questions and Answer session to clear any doubts.

Duration :

  • 1 hour - 1 hour, 30mins.

Tailored Workshops

The workshop will be tailored for :

  • Independent house composting techniques
  • Apartment / layout composting techniques
  • Workshops for Adults (with more technical details on composting process)
  • Workshops for Kids (Fun, Interactive way to learn something new!)

After attending the workshop, you will know how we could all heal the soil together, by not wasting such rich resources from our own kitchen 'waste'.

Once you get the hang of it, you could then spread the fever too (and Yes, I expect you to spread the addiction too)!

    3. Hi Uma.. I read about composting in your blog and also saw a video and article by Ms.Vani Mururthy.. I do have a lot of questions. Since i'm overseas and live in an apt, Bokashi Method will be the right choice but i have to wait until April to get my ecobin when i'm coming to india. But i cannot ship the bokashi bran that comes with it. Is it possible to use a diiferent magic microbes with the ecobins?

Until April i thought about trying the De'grade method that MS.Vani had mentioned. I have a few questions on it.

      1. Can we use the pots available instead of Khambha pots? If we can, do we need to drill holes?
      2. She had mentioned coco peat with tested microbes. Is this the normal coco peat that is found?

That is all for now. Tks in advance

    4. Hello Preethi!

Yes, you could use any bokashi bran. The composition and quality of the bran might be different and hence the results may vary. Try finding out from vendors if they ship abroad.

If you have the time and patience, we can make our own bran at home. Check this method - myecobin.in/media/how_to_make_your_own_bokashi_bran.pdf
If you are in OTG group, Krishna Kumar R also takes a workshop on making own bran. If you have any questions regarding this, you could shoot it to him.

We can surely use earthen pots (something that is breathable), no need to drill holes in it since it would be breathable, add more carbon items to it - dry leaves, shredded cardboard, paper etc.

This is normal cocopeat with added microbes in it for faster decomposition. With this method, stirring is not required. You could buy these from DailyDump ir BeingEco. Check out more brands here - http://www.swachagraha.in/#!take-the-challenge/caizn

  3. Hi Uma

I am a beginner in composting. 3 weeks ago I started adding fruits and vegies peel in an earthen pot with few holes. Everyday I put dry leaves alongwith peels and sprinkle some water. On first day I added 1/2 cup of butter milk. Now my pot is 3/4 full and I stir it everyday. But now it is attracting flies and mosquitoes and sometimes it smells. From the last two days I am adding remix powder (from Daily dump). Is that enough to do composting? How can I speed up the process? Can we add leftover cooked rice/vegetables? Pls advise.

    Thanks
    Seema Khan
